One of the common arguments against Sabbath is that Sabbath is not a part of the "new covenant." I have spent COUNTLESS hours trying to figure out exactly what the heck that means, and I have to say, I'm still not sure. That being said, I found many verses in the New Testament that confirm people who followed Messiah OBSERVED Sabbath. If Messiah did in fact abolished the Sabbath, it would seem that neither He nor His followers got the memo. Please read for yourself. There could be more, please do your own research and come to your own conclusions.
1. If Messiah was in fact abolishing Sabbath, He had a funny way of telling and showing us. One, He never said He was abolishing Sabbath. And TWO He Himself was a Sabbath observer. We clearly see going to the synagogue on Sabbath was “HIS CUSTOM.”
Luk 4:16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.
Mat 12:9 Departing from there, He went into their synagogue. Mat 12:10 And a man [was there] whose hand was withered. And they questioned Jesus, asking, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"-- so that they might accuse Him. Mat 12:11 And He said to them, "What man is there among you who has a sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out? Mat 12:12 "How much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."
Mar 1:21 They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and [began] to teach. Mar 1:22 They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as [one] having authority, and not as the scribes.
Mar 3:1 He entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered. Mar 3:2 They were watching Him [to see] if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. Mar 3:3 He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and come forward!" Mar 3:4 And He said to them, "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?" But they kept silent. Mar 3:5 After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand."
Mar 6:2 When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man [get] these things, and what is [this] wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands? Mar 6:3 "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him. Mar 6:4 YAHUSHAsaid to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his [own] relatives and in his [own] household."
Luk 4:31 And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbath; Luk 4:32 and they were amazed at His teaching, for His message was with authority.
Luk 6:6 On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
Luk 13:10 And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.
2. After Messiah was killed, Mary Magdeline and Mary got spices to anoint His body. Sabbath was so important to them, they did not put the perfume and spices on Messiah's dead body because they had to rest on Sabbath. Let that sink in... even His death did not give them adequate reason to break the Sabbath.
Luk 23:56 Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
3. More proof the Mary's observed Sabbath, they waited until after the Sabbath to go to Mesiah's grave. If Sabbath was no longer a law, they clearly did not understand.
Mat 28:1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first [day] of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave.
Mar 16:1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the [mother] of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. Mar 16:2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
4. Messiah Himself confirmed the law, saying Sabbath was made for man, aka humans.
Mar 2:27 YAHUSHA said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
5. If Sabbath was not a law, Messiah would have no need to clarify what is and what is not lawful.
Mat 12:12 "How much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."
6. If Sabbath was done away with, there would be no reason for Messiah to discuss Sabbath during the great tribulation.
Mat 24:20 "But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath. Mat 24:21 "For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will.
7. If Sabbath was not a law, there would be no reason for Messiah to say He is Master of Sabbath. The statement would be irrelevant.
Mat 12:8 "For the Son of Man is Master of the Sabbath."
Luk 6:5 And He was saying to them, "The Son of Man is Master of the Sabbath."
Mark 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is MASTER also of the sabbath.
