Part 8: Consequences for Not Observing Sabbath

I'm not trying to scare anybody, but I don't think it's good. Let's take a look at some scriptures.

1. Sabbath violators will incur His wrath:

"Did not your fathers do the same, so that our God brought on us and on this city all this trouble? Yet you are adding to the wrath on Israel by profaning the sabbath." NEHEMIAH 13:18

"But the house of Israel rebelled against Me (Yahuah) in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes and they rejected My ordinances, by which, if a man observes them, he will live; and My sabbaths they greatly profaned. Then I resolved to pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them. But I acted for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, before whose sight I had brought them out." EZEKIEL 20:13-14

"But the children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, nor were they careful to observe My ordinances, by which, [if] a man observes them, he will live; they profaned My sabbaths. So I resolved to pour out My wrath on them, to accomplish My anger against them in the wilderness. But I withdrew My hand and acted for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out. EZEKIEL 20:21-22

Avoid His wrath, obey.

2. Yahuah Himself tells the us the penalty for breaking Sabbath, physical death:

'Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you.

Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death;

for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people.' EXODUS 31:14

'For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, set apart to Yahuah;

whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death.'

EXODUS 31:14

"For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a holy [day], a sabbath of complete rest to Yahuah;

whoever does any work on it shall be put to death.

EXODUS 35:2

I actually believe the death penalty was in His mercy. He needed us to understand the seriousness of breaking His laws. Yahuah repeats what He needs to make sure we understand. Please understand what He is saying here, He does not mince His words. He is merciful, He warns us - whether or not we decide to take His warnings seriously is a personal choice. I beg you to believe what He says.

3. We already discussed Isaiah 66, but these verses bare repeating. Sabbath will be observed in the new heavens and new earth. Said another way, Sabbath will be observed for eternity.

"For just as the new heavens and the new earth which I make will endure before Me," declares YHWH, So your offspring and your name will endure.

And it shall be from new moon to new moon and from sabbath to sabbath,

All mankind will come to bow down before Me," says YHWH.

ISAIAH 66:22-23

What YHWH says in the next verse is what may send a chill up your spine:

Then they (the obedient) will go forth and look on the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me.

For their worm will not die and their fire will not be quenched;

and they will be an abhorrence to mankind."

ISAIAH 66:24

The key word is "transgress." Again, sin is transgression, or breaking, of the law (1 Joh 3:4). The law (10 Commandments) clearly tells us to REST on Sabbath. Let's not be transgressors, REST on Sabbath. The fate of those who transgress is terrifying but avoidable.

4. Neither wrath or dying sounds too wonderful but this consequence is the worst. We are all going to suffer the first physical death. The second death, or final death, is what we are trying to avoid. If you are like me and totally unfamiliar with the concept, we learn about the second death in the last book of the bible:

'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

He who overcomes will not be hurt by the second death.'

REVELATION 2:11

Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection;

over these the second death has no power,

but they will be priests of Elohim and of Messiah and will reign with Him for a thousand years.

REVELATION 20:6

Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.

This is the second death, the lake of fire.

And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

REVELATION 20:14-15

We "earn" our place in the lake of fire by ignoring His eternal laws.

"Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine.

The soul who sins will die."

EZEKIEL 18:4

Messiah's brother James gives us the same conclusion:

"Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin;

and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death."

JAMES 1:15

In case there's any doubt about WHAT sin is, the apostle John clears that right up for us:

Whosoever committeth sin transgresses also the law:

for sin is the transgression of the law.

1 JOHN 3:4

When we ignore the Sabbath, we are transgressing His law. We are sinning against Him. We do not want to do that. We know Satan is a transgressor and is going into the lake of fire (Rev 20:10), no doubt there. He'd like to take as many of us with him as possible. How? By leading us into sin and earning the rightful wage of the second death. Obey the Commandments and live.
