New Heaven and New Earth

What I thought...

I had no knowledge there was ever going to be a new heaven or new earth. 

What I learned...

Based on the chronology in the book of Revelation, the new/renewed heaven and earth will be experienced or created directly following judgement. Only those whose names are written in the book of life, will join Messiah and YHWH in the new heaven and earth.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth;

for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer sea.

More on what I learned....

I am interpreting the book of Revelation as literal events that will occur, not as figurative poetry. I realize people have been trying to understand the book of Revelation for millennia, I do not pretend to have it “figured out.” While my interpretations may or may not be correct, I will provide the scripture that led me to my conclusions. Please do your own study and come to your own conclusions.

 

Let’s first go through some of the events leading up to the new heaven and new earth. We will begin with Messiah’s second coming and end with the new heaven and new earth. There is prophecy throughout both the old and new testaments on these events, but to keep things simple we’re going to follow the sequence as laid out in Revelation.

  • Rev 19:1 - Messiah’s 2nd coming, He returns on a white horse with His army

  • Rev 19:1-19 - Messiah judges and wages war

  • Rev 19:21 - Messiah defeats those against Him with the sword of His mouth

  • Rev 19:17-21 - Great supper of the birds where the birds will eat the flesh of those who came against Messiah and His army

  • Rev 19:20 - The beast and the false prophet are thrown ALIVE in the lake of fire

  • Rev 20:1-2 - A messenger (angel) lays hold of Satan and binds him for 1,000 years so Satan can no longer deceive the nations

  • Rev 20:4-6 - First resurrection – those who were “beheaded” and those who did not worship the beast

  • Rev 20:4-6 - Messiah’s millennial or 1,000 year reign on earth

  • Rev 20:4-6 - Those who are part of the first resurrection are priests of YHWH and Messiah during Messiah’s millennial reign

  • Rev 20:5 - The rest of the dead will NOT come to life until Messiah’s 1,000 year reign is complete

  • Rev 20:6-7 - Satan is released after the 1,000 years and will once again deceive the nations

  • Rev 20:8 - Those following Satan will surround Jerusalem, there will be a LOT of people  (like the sands of the sea)

  • Rev 20:9 - Fire will come down from heaven and DEVOUR those against Jerusalem

  • THEORY: The fire that comes down is YHWH returning to earth, known as THE DAY OF YHWH, see study here

  • Rev 20:10 - Satan will receive his final judgement in the lake of fire where he will be tormented forever and ever

  • Rev 20:11 - Human judgement scene begins

  • Rev 20:11 - Casual mention “heaven and earth” fled from YHWH’s presence – at this point, heaven and earth as we know it today is no more

  • Rev 20:11-13 - The rest of the dead are resurrected – I believe this is “the last day” Messiah was speaking of, see verses below:

    • Joh 6:44 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. "​

    • Joh 6:54 "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."

    • Joh 11:23 Yahusha said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Joh 11:24 Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." 

  • Rev 20:11-15 - Humanity is judged based on the deeds written down in books (plural), see study here

  • Rev 20:14-15 - Those who are not in the book of life are thrown into the lake of fire and experience the “second death,” see study here

  • Rev 21:1 - NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH

New or Renewed Heaven and Earth?

Some translations of Revelation 21:1 say RENEWED instead of NEW heaven and earth. The earth was “renewed” after the flood when YHWH cleansed the earth of its sin by way of WATER. YHWH will again cleanse the earth of its sin, but the final cleansing is by way of FIRE (the day of YHWH here). Some believe the fire is how the earth will be RENEWED or made new. Other’s believe YHWH will completely destroy the heavens and the earth and start from scratch. We can’t be sure, obviously. Either way, I think we can all agree we’d like to be a part of the new or renewed heaven and earth and not in that lake of fire. 

Excluded...

One more point before we get into the details. Unfortunately, not all people are allowed entrance into the new heaven and new earth. I’m not comfortable making statements such as “if you do this, then” type of a scenario. However, below are verses from Revelation that list out sins of those that are “outside” of the new heaven and earth.

Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers (enchant with drugs) and the immoral persons (those who whore) and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.

REVELATION 22:15

...and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

REVELATION 21:27

"But for the cowardly and untrustworthy and abominable and murderers and immoral persons (those who whore) and sorcerers (drug sorcerers) and idolaters and all liars, their part [will be] in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

REVELATION 21:8

The thought of being "outside" is terrifying so let's move on.

New Heaven and New Earth

We will go through verses that describe the new heaven and new earth. Some of the verses are repeated. Why? Often times there are more than one HUGE point made in a verse. Let's begin.

 

1. YHWH currently dwells in heaven.

 

'Look down from Your holy habitation, from heaven,

and bless Your people Israel, and the ground which You have given us,

a land flowing with milk and honey, as You swore to our fathers.'

DEUTERONOMY 26:15

 

"Listen to the supplications of Your servant and of Your people Israel when they pray toward this place;

hear from Your dwelling place, from heaven; hear and forgive.”

2 CHRONICLES 6:21

2. The heavens are destroyed in “the day of YHWH” – see also study on the day of YHWH here.

 

But the day of YHWH will come like a thief,

in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat,

and the earth and its works will be burned up.

 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,  looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God,

because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!

 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

2 PETER 3:10-13

 

3. Since the first heaven and earth were destroyed with intense heat, there will be a new heaven and earth.

 

...and there is no longer [any] sea.

REVELATION 21:1

4. There will be no sea in the new heaven or earth. YHWH made the earth through water, and destroyed said earth with water in the flood. In the new heaven and earth there will no longer be any sea. Fascinating.

 

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away,

and there is no longer [any] sea.

REVELATION 21:1

 

For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of Elohim [the] heavens existed long ago

and [the] earth was formed out of water and by water,

through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water.

2 PETER 3:5-6

​

5. YHWH will tabernacle, or dwell, among mankind.

 

 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying,

"Behold, the tabernacle of Elohim is among men, and He will dwell among them,

and they shall be His people, and Elohim Himself will be among them...

REVELATION 21:3

 

6. There will no longer be any death or suffering. Remember that death itself was thrown in the lake of fire at the end of judgement.

 

..and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be death;

there will no longer be mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away."

REVELATION 21:4

 

 Yahusha said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,

but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead,

neither marry nor are given in marriage; 

for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of Elohim, being sons of the resurrection.

LUKE 20:34-36

           

Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.

REVALTION 20:14

 

 

7. The curse of Adam is over. The curse brought all manner of human suffering including death. See Genesis 3:14-19 for curses.

There will no longer be any curse;

and the throne of Elohim and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bondservants will serve Him;

REVELATION 22:3

 

People will live in it, and there will no longer be a curse, for Jerusalem will dwell in security.

ZECHARIAH 14:11

 

8. This is sort of weird to think about. People will no longer marry. I presume because those included in the new heaven and new earth will be immortal, no need to reproduce because there is no death?  

 

Yahusha said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,

but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead,

neither marry nor are given in marriage; for they cannot even die anymore,

because they are like angels, and are sons of Elohim, being sons of the resurrection.

LUKE 20:34-36

9. There will be kings and many nations. What? Countries in the new heaven and new earth? Crazy!

 

The nations will walk by its (new Jerusalem) light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.

In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed;

and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it;

and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it,

but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

REVELATION 21:24-27

New Jerusalem

Now let’s examine the city where YHWH and Messiah will actually dwell. Spoiler alert, it’s not Rome.

 

1. There is a new city for the new heaven and new earth that comes down from heaven, Jerusalem.

​

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from Elohim,

made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.

REVELATION 21:2

 

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain,

and showed me the set apart city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from Elohim,

having the glory of Elohim. Her brilliance was like a very costly stone,

as a stone of crystal-clear jasper.

REVELATION 21:10-11

 

2. The city will be BEDAZZLED.

​

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain,

and showed me the set apart city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from Elohim,

having the glory of Elohim. Her brilliance was like a very costly stone,

as a stone of crystal-clear jasper.

REVELATION 21:10-11

 

3. The city itself is described as a “bride” and “the wife of the Lamb.” The Lamb of course is the Messiah Yahusha.

​

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from Elohim,

made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.

REVELATION 21:2

​

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and spoke with me, saying, "Come here, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb."

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain,

and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem,

coming down out of heaven from Elohim, having the glory of God.

REVELATION 21:9-11

 

4. Only those people whose names are found in the book of life, also called the Lamb’s book of life will gain entrance into the new Jerusalem. Remember those not in the book of life were thrown into the lake of fire at the end of judgement, so they’re clearly not in the new Jerusalem.

...and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it,

but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

REVELATION 21:27

 

And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

REVELATION 20:15

 

 

5. There will no longer be the sun, or the moon as YHWH and Yahusha will be the light.

​

And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it,

for the glory of Elohim has illumined it, and its lamp [is] the Lamb.

REVELATION 21:23

 

 And there will no longer be [any] night;

and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the YHWH Elohim will illumine them;

and they will reign forever and ever.

REVELATION 22:5

 

6. There will no longer be night.

​

And there will no longer be [any] night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun,

because the YHWH Elohim will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever.

7. The city will have twelve gates made of a single pearl. I presume this is where the “pearlie gates” saying came from. I always thought there was ONE pearlie gate, not TWELVE as stated in Revelation.

​

And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl.

And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

REVELATION 21:21

​

8. The twelve gates will have the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. Context on the twelve tribes. Abraham is the father of Isaac who is the father of Jacob. Jacob’s name was changed to Israel. Jacob/Israel had twelve sons, those sons are the “twelve tribes of Israel.” We see further along, the nations (plural) enter through the gates, no just those from the 12 tribes.

It had a great and high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names [were] written on them,

which are of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.

REVELATION 21:12

 

9. The throne of our Creator and the Lamb (Messiah) will be in the new Jerusalem.

​

Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal,

coming from the throne of Elohim and of the Lamb, 

in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve [kinds of] fruit,

yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

REVELATION 22:1-2

 

10. Jerusalem will have a river of life.

​

Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of Elohim and of the Lamb,

in the middle of its street.

11. Next to the river of life will be the tree of life that bears twelve kinds of fruit.

​

...On either side of the river was the tree of life,

bearing twelve [kinds of] fruit, yielding its fruit every month;

and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

REVELATION 22:2

 

12. The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

​

13. This next point is FASCINATING! All the nations will worship YHWH on sabbath for ETERNITY! See also Sabbath study here.

"For just as the new heavens and the new earth Which I make will endure before Me," declares YHWH,

"So your offspring and your name will endure."  

"And it shall be from new moon to new moon And from sabbath to sabbath,

All mankind will come to bow down before Me," says YHWH.

ISAIAH 66:22

 

The sum of Your word is truth,

And every one of Your righteous laws are eternal.

PSALM 119:160

Conclusion

Those who have washed their robes in righteousness…..

 

"These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

MATTHEW 25:46

 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

2 PETER 3:13

 

It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright [and] clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

REVELATION 19:8

 

Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life,

and may enter by the gates into the city.

Righteousness is faith proved by obedience to His laws….

 

Then he (Abraham) believed in YHWH; and He reckoned it to him (Abraham) as righteousness.

Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, YHAH appeared to Abram and said to him,

"I am Elohim Almighty; Walk before Me, and be PERFECT.

"It will be righteousness for us if we are careful to observe all this commandment before YHWH our Elohim,

just as He commanded us."

"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Master, Mater,' will enter the kingdom of heaven,

but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven [will enter]."

"For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven,

he is My brother and sister and mother."

Rev 21:7 "He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his Elohim and he will be My son.

 

 

They will see YHWH’s face…

 

 ...they will see His face, and His name [will be] on their foreheads.

I BELIEVE THIS IS TALKING ABOUT LIFE DURING MESSIAH’S MILLENIAL REIGN AND THE NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH: 

 

Isa 65:13 Therefore, thus says YHWH Elohim, "Behold, My servants will eat, but you will be hungry.

Behold, My servants will drink, but you will be thirsty.

Behold, My servants will rejoice, but you will be put to shame.

Isa 65:14 "Behold, My servants will shout joyfully with a glad heart, But you will cry out with a heavy heart, And you will wail with a broken spirit.

Isa 65:15 "You will leave your name for a curse to My chosen ones,

And YHWH Elohim will slay you. But My servants will be called by another name.

Isa 65:20 "No longer will there be in it an infant [who lives but a few] days,

Or an old man who does not live out his days;

For the youth will die at the age of one hundred And the one who does not reach the age of one hundred Will be [thought] accursed.

For as the lifetime of a tree, [so will be] the days of My people,

and while they are still speaking, I will hear.

and dust will be the serpent's food.

They will do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain," says YHWH.

Isa 66:1 Thus says YHWH, "Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.

Where then is a house you could build for Me? And where is a place that I may rest?

Isa 66:2 "For My hand made all these things, Thus all these things came into being," declares YHWH.

ALL OF HUMANITY WILL WORSHIP YHWH ON SABBATH: 

Isa 66:22 "For just as the new heavens and the new earth Which I make will endure before Me,"

declares YHWH, "So your offspring and your name will endure.

Isa 66:23 "And it shall be from new moon to new moon

And from sabbath to sabbath, All mankind will come to bow down before Me," says YHWH.

Isa 66:24 "Then they will go forth and look On the corpses of the men

Who have transgressed against Me. For their worm will not die And their fire will not be quenched;

And they will be an abhorrence to all mankind."

THE APOSTLE PETER SPEAKING:

​

Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way,

what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,

looking for and hastening the coming of the day of Elohim,

because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 

But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth,

in which righteousness dwells.

Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace,

spotless and blameless, and regard the patience of our Messiah [as] salvation; 

2 PETER 3: 11-15
