The Day of the Lord is
The Day of YAHUAH

The Day of "the LORD" is the Day of Yahuah

First let me say how it pained me to name this tab, "the Day of the LORD." The Creator's name, YHWH, was replaced with a title, "LORD." This is not conspiracy theory, one only needs to read the translation or preface notes in the bible to verify this fact. I believe every translation has translation notes, but not every copy of specific translations includes the notes. For example, my NASB has translation notes but the KJV I own does not.

The actual day of the Lord is called “the Day of YHWH.”  Going forward, I will refer to this day as "the day of YHWH."

What I thought...

The day of YHWH was the day Messiah resurrected, or maybe it was a special day dedicated to YHWH or Messiah. I honestly wasn’t sure.

What I learned...

The day of YHWH is the day our Creator returns to the earth and destroys sinners, heaven, and earth with FIRE.

More on the day of YHWH

How the heck did I confuse a day of complete destruction with the resurrection of Messiah? Reading about this day is not at all pleasant but I think we can agree that people unfortunately LOVE destruction and violence. Think video games and movies, absolutely no shortage of violence or destruction there. Despite humanity’s obsession with violence, it seems little attention is given to this day. I suspect we don’t learn about this day because we like to think of the “make us feel better” aspects of our Creator while ignoring the parts that are let’s say, not as warm and fuzzy.

Enter the not so warm and fuzzy, the day of YHWH is terrifying. YHWH will exact His revenge on those who transgress Him. There will be destruction of sinners, heaven, and the earth by way of FIRE. The first cleansing was with water during the great flood, the second cleansing will be with fire. There are verses from both the “old” and “new” testament providing consistent descriptions. Meaning, the coming of Messiah does not change humanity’s fate executed on that day. To illustrate the consistency between old and new testaments, below are two OT verses followed by a NT verse describing the day of YHWH.

Behold, the day of YHWH is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger,

To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it.

ISAIAH 13:9

Neither their silver nor their gold Will be able to deliver them

On the day of YHWH’s wrath;

And all the earth will be devoured in the fire of His jealousy,

For He will make a complete end, Indeed a terrifying one,

Of all the inhabitants of the earth.

ZEPHANIAH 1:18

But the day of YHWH will come like a thief,

in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way,

what sort of people ought you to be in set apart conduct and godliness,

looking for and hastening the coming of the day of Elohim,

because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning,

and the elements will melt with intense heat!

But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth,

in which righteousness dwells.

2 PETER 3:10-13

Sinners exterminated. Devoured in fire. Complete end. Destroyed with intense heat. No doubt similar descriptions between the two testaments. Further, I think you may get the picture the day of YHWH is not a day that any of us want to experience if we’re on the wrong side of our Creator.

I found 23 verses in the Old Testament and 3 in the New Testament that seem to describe "the day of YHWH." I saw some themes, or patterns. Buckle up. You don't have to look these verses up, I included them at the end of the page (by the same categories).

  • YHWH will make a complete end to all the inhabitants of the earth (Zephaniah 1:18)

  • The earth destroyed with FIRE (Zephania 1:118 & 2 Peter 3:10)

  • YHWH will pour out his ANGER and WRATH (Isaiah 13:9; Zephaniah 1:18 & Zephaniah 2:1)

  • The day is about VENGEANCE (Isaiah 34:8; Jeremiah 46:10)

  • Sinners will be destroyed (Isaiah 13:9)

  • The earth will be BURNED (Isaiah 34:8; Joel 2:1; Zephaniah 1:18; 2Peter 3:10)

  • The day will come like a THIEF (Joel 2:1; 1Thessalonians 5:2; 2Peter 3:10)

The big question I had after this study is hard to put in words. Further, I am not even close to an answer. We're taught that YHWH poured out all His wrath for sinners on Messiah. However, based on this study it seems YHWH has plenty of wrath in store for this earth and its' sinners.  I thought, well maybe the day of YHWH was the day Messiah was killed but that can't be either. The earth was not destroyed, there was no "devouring" fire described by any of the apostles. Unfortunately, since I don't know the answer, we'll have to move on. I don't think the day of YHWH will happen for quite some time, which leads the next point. When is the day of YHWH?

The day of YHWH - My THEORY on when this happens...

Before we get into the details, two points are needed to support my theory.

(1) YHWH is described as a CONSUMING FIRE.

For YHWH your Elohim is a consuming fire,

a jealous Elohim.

DEUTERONOMY 4:24

Think of when YHWH appeared to Moses, He was a BURNING bush (Exodus 3:2-4). Think of when He descended on Mount Sinai, the mountaintop was on fire. The top of thmountain is still black (burnt) today (click here for biblical evidence on Mt. Sinai).

Now Mount Sinai [was] all in smoke because YHWH descended upon it in fire;

and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace,

and the whole mountain quaked violently.

EXODUS 19:18

"YHWH gave me the two tablets of stone written by the finger of Elohim;

and on them [were] all the words which YHWH had SPOKEN

with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly."

DEUTERONOMY 9:10

The point to be made is that YHWH Himself has an element of fire to Him. Amazing and terrifying at the same time.

(2) The fire of YHWH CONSUMES people.

Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans,

and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before YHWH,

which He had not commanded them.

And fire came out from the presence of YHWH and consumed them,

and they died before YHWH.

LEVITICUS 10:1

Now the people became like those who complain of adversity in the hearing of YHWH;

and when YHWH heard [it], His anger was kindled,

and the fire of YHWH burned among them and consumed of the outskirts of the camp.

NUMBERS 11:1

Fire also came forth from YHWH and

consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering the incense.

NUMBERS 16:35

Ok, quick recap. YHWH is described as a “consuming fire.” His fire sometimes “consumes” people.

Now, let's take a look at the events of Revelation chapter 20. Before going into detail, what surprised me is the relatively small number of verses that describe such monumental events. For example, Messiah's 1,000 year reign on earth is summed up in three verses. The "bold" text is my commentary, below the commentary is the appropriate excerpt from Revelation 20.

1. Messiah returns a second time, and reigns on earth for 1,000 years:

Rev 20:4 Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I [saw] the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Yahusha and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Messiah for a thousand years. Rev 20:5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. Rev 20:6 Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of Elohim and of Messiah and will reign with Him for a thousand years.

2. At the end of Messiah’s 1,000 reign, Satan gathers the nations for the FINAL BATTLE:

Rev 20:7 When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison, Rev 20:8 and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore.

3. Satan’s people surround the “beloved city” (I assume Jerusalem) are devoured with fire from heaven:

Rev 20:9 And they came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them.

4. Satan is thrown in the lake of fire:

Rev 20:10 And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

5. Next, the apostle John (author of Revelation) describes the throne of YHWH, and casually mentions the heaven and earth “fled away”?!?!?!: Rev 20:11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.

6. The great judgement of all humanity, according to deeds, see additional study here: Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one [of them] according to their deeds.

7. Those not found in the book of life, are unfortunately thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death:

Rev 20:14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. Rev 20:15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

There is much prophecy on these events outside of Revelation 20, please do your own research.

Now, my THEORY. This is only a theory and could be totally wrong: I wonder if the day of YHWH is the SAME day/time as the final battle described above in Revelation. The way I connect the events is through the common thread: DESTRUCTION BY FIRE. Of course I can’t be sure, but the events seem to have similarities.

  • The day of the YHWH: Sinners, heaven and earth will be destroyed by fire (see “day of the YHWH” verses at the bottom of the page).

  • The FINAL battle: We’re told “fire comes down from heaven and consumes them” (Revelation 20:9). The them are those that are against Messiah and His earthly kingdom. Pretty sure the “them” could be described as sinners.

If we think of sin as a combustible material, can we assume those defiled with sin will catch fire in the presence of our Creator? I’m not sure, but I SUSPECT when He comes to earth, all sinners will literally go up in smoke. Those defiled with sin will be consumed. Meaning, you can’t stand in the presence of our Creator if you’re filled with sin.

I made the connection of people not being able to stand in His presence because of what happened at Mt. Sinai.  After our Creator descended on the mountain, He warns Moses NOT to let the people approach Him or they will perish.

Then YHWH spoke to Moses, "

Go down, warn the people,

so that they do not break through to YHWH to gaze, and many of them perish.”

“Also let the priests who come near to Yahuah consecrate themselves,

or else Yahuah will break out against them."

Moses said to Yahuah, "The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You warned us, saying, 'Set bounds about the mountain and consecrate it.'"

Then Yahuah said to him, "Go down and come up [again], you and Aaron with you;

but do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to Yahuah,

or He will break forth upon them."

EXODUS 19: 21-24

If the priests or the people tried to get close to YHWH or "gaze" at Him, He would "break out against them." Likewise, I wonder if when YHWH returns on "the day of YHWH" those who are defiled will be consumed. Further, I SUSPECT the land itself will also catch fire as it's been defiled by the shedding of innocent blood, evil deeds, idolatry, aka sin. No sinners, not even the land itself can stand in His presence being defiled by sin.

'So you shall not pollute the land in which you are;

for blood pollutes the land and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it.

NUMBERS 35:33

"Son of man, when the house of Israel was living in their own land,

they defiled it (the land) by their ways and their deeds;

their way before Me was like the uncleanness of a woman in her impurity.

Therefore I poured out My wrath on them for the blood which they had shed on the land,

because they had defiled it with their idols.”

EZEKIEL 36:17

Could that be HOW heaven and earth are destroyed? YHWH returns as described in the verses on “the day of YHWH.” The land being defiled, is consumed? The final battle is described in Rev 20:7-10 heaven and earth are presumably still standing. In the next verse, verse 11, we’re told heaven and earth “fled away”?

Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it,

from whose presence earth and heaven fled away,

and no place was found for them.

REVELATION 20:11

How could the final battle happen if the earth is already destroyed? Is it logical that He would destroy the earth during the final battle, judge us, then create the new heaven and earth?  Seems logical in my mind and does appear to follow the sequence of events as described in Revelation.

Directly after judgement begins the new chapter. Guess what the first verse says? The existing heaven and earth are GONE. We are told of a new heaven, earth, and Jerusalem. Some translations say "renewed" heaven and earth.

No more heaven and earth: Rev 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer [any] sea.

New Jerusalem: Rev 21:2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.

In Revelation, we are not told HOW heaven and earth are destroyed. However, the scripture describing the day of YHWH provides LOTS of details on how heaven and earth are destroyed. Could it be coincidence that “fire comes down from heaven” in the final battle in Revelation, AND fire is used to destroy heaven and earth on His day? Can we fill in the blanks of Revelation with the destruction of heaven and earth described in the day of YHWH? You decide.

In the end the order and connection of these prophetic (future) events is not nearly as important as their consequence. The destruction of SINNERS by way of FIRE. I certainly do NOT want to be destroyed and certainly not by fire. As such, I will continue to learn His laws and ways found in the eternal TORAH and apply them to my life. The wages of righteousness or obedience is LIFE!

The wages of the righteous is life,

the income of the wicked, punishment.

PROVERBS 10:16

He who is steadfast in righteousness [will attain] to life,

And he who pursues evil [will bring about] his own death.

PROVERBS 11:19

In the way of righteousness is life,

and in [its] pathway there is no death.

PROVERBS 12:28

My recommendation for anyone seeking our Creator is to bring your life into immediate obedience to the 10 Commandments (below) and seek Him individually through His word.

TEN COMMANDMENTS

(1) "You shall have no other gods before Me. EXODUS 20:3

(2) "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, YHWH your Elohim, am a jealous Elohim, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.  EXODUS 20:4-6

(3) Exo 20:7 "You shall not take the name of YHWH your Elohim in vain, for YHHW will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

(4) "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of YHWH your Elohim; you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. For in six days YHWH made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore YHWH blessed the sabbath day and set it apart. EXODUS 20: 8-11

(5) "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which YHWH your God gives you. EXODUS 20:12

(6) "You shall not murder." EXODUS 20:13

(7) "You shall not commit adultery." EXODUS 20:14

(8) "You shall not steal." EXODUS 20:15

(9) "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor." EXODUS 20:16

(10) "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor." EXODUS 20:17

The Day of YHWH Search Criterion

I isolated verses containing "the day of YHWH." From my review there were 23 verses in the Old testament and 3 in the new testaments, related to the day of YHWH aggregated below. I isolated verses by category or theme too. I included the spreadsheet, which is admittedly messy.  As always, please do your own search and come to your own conclusions.

Jer 17:27 "But if you do not listen to Me to keep the sabbath day set apart by not carrying a load and coming in through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem and not be quenched."'" 23. Eze 44:24 "In a dispute they shall take their stand to judge; they shall judge it according to My ordinances. • 10 New Testament Verses Confirming the Sabbath Law
This verse is sort of a mic drop moment: Luk 23:56 Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. Messiah Himself confirming the law, saying Sabbath was made for man, aka humans. Mar 2:27 YAHUSHA said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. If Sabbath was not a law, Messiah would have no need to clarify what is and what is not lawful. Mat 12:12 "How much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." If Sabbath was done away with, there would be no reason for Messiah to discuss Sabbath during the great tribulation. Mat 24:20 "But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath. Mat 24:21 "For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. If Sabbath was not a law, there would be no reason for Messiah to say He is Master of Sabbath. The statement would be irrelevant. Mat 12:8 "For the Son of Man is Master of the Sabbath." Luk 6:5 And He was saying to them, "The Son of Man is Master of the Sabbath." Mark 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is MASTER also of the sabbath. Mary Magdaline and Mary waited until after the Sabbath to go to Mesiah's grave. If Sabbath was no longer a law, they clearly did not understand. Mat 28:1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first [day] of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. Mar 16:1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the [mother] of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. Mar 16:2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
  • 8 Additional Verse(s) in Tanak (Old Testament) Stating/Confirming Sabbath as Law
These are not direct quotes from the Creator but from the books of Old Testament. There could be more, please do your own research. Moses confirming Sabbath is law: 1. Exo 16:23 then he said to them, "This is what YAHUAH meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to YAHUAH. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over put aside to be kept until morning." 2. Exo 16:25 Moses said, "Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to YAHUAH; today you will not find it in the field. 3. Exo 16:26 "Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, [the] sabbath, there will be none." 4. Exo 35:1 Then Moses assembled all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and said to them, "These are the things that YAHUAH has commanded [you] to do: Exo 35:2 "For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a holy [day], a sabbath of complete rest to YHWH; whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. Solomon confirming Sabbath is a law: 5. 2Ch 2:4 "Behold, I am about to build a house for the name of YAHUAH my God, dedicating it to Him, to burn fragrant incense before Him and [to set out] the showbread continually, and to offer burnt offerings morning and evening, on sabbaths and on new moons and on the appointed feasts of YHWH our God, this [being required] forever in Israel. 6. 2Ch 8:12 Then Solomon offered burnt offerings to YAHUAH on the altar of YAHUAH which he had built before the porch; 2Ch 8:13 and [did so] according to the daily rule, offering [them] up according to the commandment of Moses, for the sabbaths, the new moons and the three annual feasts-- the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Booths. Other verses confirming Sabbath is a law: 7. Neh 9:14 "So You made known to them Your holy sabbath, And laid down for them commandments, statutes and law, Through Your servant Moses. " 8. 2Ch 31:3 [He] also [appointed] the king's portion of his goods for the burnt offerings, [namely], for the morning and evening burnt offerings, and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths and for the new moons and for the fixed festivals, as it is written in the law of YAHUAH.
